Travelling – Arrival in Krakow

You can get to Kraków overland (by car, bus or by rail) or by air (the city’s airport is located in Balice, near Kraków).

ARRIVING BY AIR:

The domestic and international airport in Balice is located within 11 km west of Kraków, just beside the western bypass of the city, owing to which it is easily accessible not only to the residents and those just arriving in Kraków, but also to those who travel from/to the Silesia region or the Podkarpackie voivodeship (the A4 motorway).

Krakow has direct air connections with: Amsterdam, Berlin, Bonn / Cologne, Budapest, Copenhagen, Chicago, Dortmund, Dublin, Frankfurt, Glasgow, London, Milan, Munich,  Oslo, Paris, Prague, Rome, Stuttgart, Tel Aviv, Warsaw, Vienna, Zurich, in season Chania, Heraklion, Rhodes.

John Paul II Krakow Balice Airport is modern and easy to navigate. There is 24hr currency exchange office as well as ATM’s (bankomat) provided by PKO bank and tourist information. 

There is also Katowice-Pyrzowice Airport located around 100km away from Krakow city centre. There are regular bus connections between this airport and Krakow (every 1,5h; the ticket price c.a. 50 PLN).

Getting to Kraków-Balice Airport:
  • by car: along the A4 motorway from the west and south of Kraków, through Wola Justowska – along Królowej Jadwigi St or through Rząska and Szczyglice – along Balicka St (there are many car parks at the airport and nearby);

  • by public bus: lines no.: 208, 292 and 902 (current cost: full fare – PLN 4, reduced fare – PLN 2). For local bus travel information please visit: MPK which provides bus service in Krakow.

  • by light rail from Kraków Central Station (fastest connection – c.a. 20 minutes, current cost – PLN 12)

  • radio taxi 919 – cost c.a. 80 PLN (Monday – Saturday 6:00– 22:00) and c.a. 120 PLN (Monday – Saturday 22:00– 6:00 and on Sunday)

Officially licensed taxis stand outside the main entrance. Distance to the city centre c.a. 11km.

 ARRIVING BY TRAIN:

Kraków Central Railway Station  itself is located in the city centre, between streets: Pawia, Lubicz, Wita Stwosza and Bosacka.

ARRIVING BY CAR:

Those who take the car or bus can access the city from:

– the West: travelling along the A4 motorway that connects Germany and Poland, or along parallel roads no. 79, 44 and 780

– the North: road no. 7 (E77)

– the East: the A4 motorway (eastern section still under construction) or parallel road no. 94

– the South: road no. 7 (S7, E77)

Parking

Car owners have to bear in mind that there are paid parking zones in the centre of Kraków – Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. You can learn more about the parking zones by following this link. (http://mi.krakow.pl/en/paid-parking-zone-in-krakow)

Fun fact: the cheapest car park in the city centre is located just above the platforms of the Kraków railway station, next to the shopping centre – Galeria Krakowska (the first hour is free of charge, second costs PLN 2, third and each subsequent – PLN 4). Access to the car park – from 29 Listopada Street, Pawia/Warszawska Street, Szlak Street or Wita Stwosza Street (from Rondo Mogilskie roundabout).

Long-distance buses are usually directed to the Regional Bus Station, located on the eastern side of the central railway station (Bosacka Street).
